Container Terminal Expansion Announced

The Alabama Port Authority (APA) and APM Terminals Mobile have agreed to proceed with construction of a new 1,300-ft container berth at the south end of the terminal, AL.com reported. This will allow the terminal to simultaneously handle three ships in the ultra large container vessel (ULCV) class. Funds for the $131-million project are to come from federal appropriations to APA and private investments from APM Terminals. The expansion will be Phase V of a long-running plan to expand the container terminal’s capacity. Components in the works include a 33-acre container yard expansion, a rail capacity upgrade and construction of a new rail flyover bridge that will enable direct on-dock rail access. Construction of the new berth will begin in 2026. It has a two-year timetable and will include the addition of a seventh ship-to-shore crane.
