MMofA Opens African Exhibit

The Mobile Museum of Art (MMofA) recently opened Vuzumazulu: The Black Solarium, which aims to unveil the hidden stories of Africa’s past and reconnect viewers to the depth of Abantu culture. “‘Vuzumazula’ translates to ‘awaken heaven,’ representing the radiant truths that illuminate the forgotten corners of our shared history,” MMofA said. “The term ‘Black Solarium’ reflects the transformative power of light and how the rich essence of Black identity absorbs and refracts it into something extraordinary.” The exhibit, by painter Abaddon “Apollo” Ben Yakongo, aims to challenge the Western and Eurocentric narratives of African history by weaving theology, spirituality and cultural traditions.
