MSO Announces “A Latin Rhapsody,” Documentary Screening
The Mobile Symphony Orchestra (MSO) will end its season with a mix of Latin rhythms in “A Latin Rhapsody” on May 18 at 7:30 p.m and May 19 at 2:30 p.m. at Saenger Theatre Mobile. The concert features Cuban pianist Aldo López-Gavilán performing George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The program starts with music from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. “We are thrilled to bring back Aldo López-Gavilán,” said Scott Speck, MSO music director. “Because Aldo is such a force of nature, we’ve programmed this concert to play to his strengths. His rendition of Rhapsody in Blue must be experienced to be believed; he channels George Gershwin’s spirit of improvisation in a way that few concert pianists can accomplish. We will also have the opportunity to hear Aldo improvise at the piano….” Additionally, Aldo and his brother, Ilmar López-Gavilán, are the subject of an award-winning documentary Los Hermanos, which follows the virtuoso siblings as they reunite for a performance after years of being separated. MSO, in partnership with the Exploreum Science Center, the Hispanic American Business Association of the Gulf Coast and the Society Mobile-La Habana, will present an exclusive screening of the documentary in the Exploreum’s PCI Digital Dome Theater on May 14. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the movie will start at 6 p.m. Guests will be able to explore the ¡Cuba! exhibit for approximately 1 hour before the screening.
