MSO To Perform Requiem

The Mobile Symphony Orchestra (MSO) will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem on April 6 at 7:30 p.m. and April 7 at 2:30 p.m. at Saenger Theatre Mobile. The orchestra will be joined by dozens of voices from the University of South Alabama Concert Choir and the Mobile Opera Chorus, both directed by Laura Moore. Soloists will be Martha Guth, soprano; Susan Platts, mezzo-soprano; Dann Coakwell, tenor; and Kevin Deas, bass. Scott Speck, MSO music director, said, “In the movie Amadeus, Mozart is startled by an anonymous masked figure who comes to his house to commission the Requiem,” Speck explains. “The music played during that striking moment is the opening of the overture to Don Giovanni—and so we begin our concert with that overture. And because Mozart has been a hero of nearly every musician since, we end the first half of our concert with a tribute to Mozart by the great Peter Tchaikovsky. Mozart was Tchaikovsky’s favorite composer, and this piece is entitled Mozartiana.” Tickets are $20-$96 and may be purchased online, by phone at 251-432-2010 or at the symphony box office at 257 Dauphin Street in Mobile. Student tickets are $10 through the MSO Big Red Ticket program for students in grades K-12 on Sundays when accompanied by a paying adult.
