“Project 42” Exhibit Kicks Off Today In Mobile

Mobile’s Alabama Contemporary Art Center is exhibiting “Project 42” by Molly Jae Vaughan starting today and continuing through January 13, 2024. Since 2012, Vaughan has utilized an interdisciplinary approach to art making to honor the lives of 42 murdered transgender and gender-nonconforming Americans. “Through the creation of unique garments and diverse collaborative memorial actions, Vaughan raises awareness of the violence that transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals, particularly trans women of color, face in contemporary American society,” the center said. The works created for “Project 42” combine textile, printmaking and painting processes into patterns developed for a specific person. They are then digitally printed onto fabrics and sewn into garments created for a specific collaborator to wear. Elements printed, stitched and embellished by hand further personalize each work.
