Examining 2020 Mobile County Bankruptcy Filings

Patch recently released data on 2020 bankruptcies in Mobile County. The pandemic’s effect of sharp swings in the economy was evident, but the number of national bankruptcies filed in 2020 was the lowest since 1986 and nearly 30% lower than in 2019. However, many experts expect bankruptcies to increase in the coming years as a delayed effect of the pandemic. There were 1,890 total bankruptcies filed in the county in 2020, compared with 2,919 in 2019, according to the U.S. Courts Administrative Office. Business-wise, the county saw 23 business bankruptcies filed in 2020, compared with 21 in 2019. Eleven of these (the same number as in 2019) were under Chapter 7, and there was an increase in one Chapter 11, to a total of 10.
