Alpha Kappa Alpha Conference Returns To Mobile
More than 6,000 Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) members are expected to visit Mobile on March 7-10, as the sorority’s South Eastern Regional (SER) conference returns to the city for the first time in five years, Lagniappe reports. AKA’s 92nd Annual Regional Conference is expected to generate a local economic impact of $5 million. The conference theme is “Soaring with Power in the Port City.” Conference events will occur throughout downtown. The annual conference will also feature two community service projects to benefit the community: planting trees in Africatown and donating nonperishable food items to help stock a local food bank. AKA was founded in 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and is considered the U.S.’s first sorority organization for African-American women. It now has an estimated 300,000 international members. SER has 14,000 members and is one of 10 nationwide regions.
