BGCSA Opens Club Registration, Establishes Scholarship

The Boys & Girls Club of South Alabama (BGCSA) has opened registration for this year’s Camp Chandler-Tonsmeire outdoor education program focused on character and leadership development and curbing summer learning loss. The summer day camp is located on more than 140 acres in Mobile at 2701 Shelton Beach Road Extension with walking and hiking trails, a swimming pool, gaga ball, archery, indoor spaces and volleyball. The goal is for campers to leave with high self-esteem, the result of mastering new skills and overcoming challenges. Hours are 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m Monday-Friday. The fee is $65 per child per week, and there is a $55 non-refundable registration fee. Additionally, BGCSA has established the Barbara and Bernard Malkove Scholarship Fund. Bernard “Berney” Malkove was a longtime supporter of BGCSA, serving in numerous positions on its board and as a national trustee of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Berney passed away in 2021, and, in keeping with his wishes, Barbara endowed the scholarship soon after. A respected businesswoman and former City of Mobile finance director, Barbara Malkove directed that the scholarship be awarded to a female BGCSA graduating senior who intends to enter the University of South Alabama to pursue a degree in science, math, technology or engineering. The scholarship will provide full tuition and books for one year and may be renewable upon application. Eligible club members interested in applying for the scholarship may contact Brenda Carlisle, BGCSA chief philanthropy officer, at email.
