MOBILE, Ala. — The U.S. Navy is holding virtual public hearings on the environmental impact of dismantling the U.S.S Enterprise on September 20 and 22 at 4-5 p.m., Mobile Baykeeper announced. The Navy is considering Coastal Alabama as a potential location for the dismantling and disposal of the ship, which was commissioned in 1961 as the nation’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and decommissioned in 2017. It is currently being stored in Newport News, Virginia. A draft environmental impact statement has been prepared for public review and comment through October 3.
