Fairhope Set To Begin Gully Stabilization

FAIRHOPE, Ala. Fairhope intends to soon begin a project to stabilize the gully behind homes on North Summit Street at a cost of more than $760,000, Gulf Coast Media reports. The Fairhope City Council has approved costs above what the National Resources Conservation Program Emergency Watershed Protection program is paying for the project through a grant of $508,326.66. If left untended, it is surmised the gully’s erosion will endanger nearby homes and other property. While the bid for the work by John G. Walton Construction Co. of Mobile was $871,342.02, Fairhope officials worked with the company to cut the costs. Mayor Sherry Sullivan will also meet with Fairhope Single Tax Corp., which owns much of the property bordering the gully, to help pay some of the matching costs.
