Native Planting Effort For Walker Island Coming Up

Local organizations in Orange Beach are asking residents and visitors for help restoring the lower Perdido Islands, OBA reports. The Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program, the City of Orange Beach and The Nature Conservancy in Alabama are partnering to lead a native species planting effort on Walker Island on July 31 at 8-11 a.m. The planting is to strengthen the shoreline and create better homes for birds, fish and other animals. Organizers will supply all tools and transportation to and from the island, but supplies and boat space are limited. Anyone 7 or older may join, though volunteers under 16 must come with a parent or guardian. Seventeen-year-olds may participate alone but require a signed waiver from a parent or legal guardian. Advance registration for all participants is required.
