Orange Beach Islands Restoration Begins

The Nature Conservancy in Orange Beach recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony marking the beginning of the Lower Perdido Islands Restoration project, Mullet Wrapper reported. The long-awaited project will restore habitat and expand Robinson and Walker islands. Construction is now underway at Robinson Island, and the entire project is expected to be complete by early summer. It is to restore 26 acres of back barrier island habitat on Robinson and Walker islands. Approximately 216,000 cubic yards of local sand will be used to build them back. Sensitive seagrass areas will be avoided. A total of 198,000 native plants will be installed across the islands to stabilize their habitats. The construction will involve multiple dredge pumps, pipelines, barges, tugboats and land-based construction equipment. Material to restore these islands will be moved through temporary dredge pipelines running between the borrow areas and fill sites on Robinson and Walker islands.
