Volkert Lands Mobile Services Agreement, Starts Corridor Project
Gov. Kay Ivey and several state and local leaders broke ground on the West Alabama Corridor Project on November 12. Volkert, Inc. announced on LinkedIn that it is serving as the owner’s agent for the four-lane road. In Ivey’s 2021 state of the state address, she announced that the state would be providing a four-lane corridor from Thomasville to Tuscaloosa. The West Alabama Corridor project will provide interstate connectivity to rural counties that currently lack a four-lane road to an interstate and ultimately result in a four-lane connection between Mobile and Tuscaloosa.
Additionally, Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced the city council’s approval of a master services agreement with Volkert for the design of streetscape improvements downtown. This design work is being conducted in conjunction with the nonprofit Downtown Mobile Alliance, which Stimpson said previously conducted an extensive study on how the streets and walkways could be safer, more inviting and more productive. The design work will focus primarily on aesthetic and practical changes to signage, landscaping and traffic flow to Downtown Mobile is walkable and bikeable for both Mobilians and visitors.
