ASMS Opens College-Level Research Facility For High Schoolers

Mobile’s Alabama School of Mathematics and Science (ASMS) recently opened its 32,000-ft2 E.O. Wilson Science Research Center, named after the famous Alabamian called “the father of biodiversity.” The facility is designed to support advanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning and the ASMS Research Fellows educational program, in which ASMS students are paired with a faculty mentor to work on a college-level research project throughout the school year. Program participants submit their work for competition at regional and state science fairs and often win top awards. With its dedicated research rooms, advanced laboratory equipment, upgraded classrooms, and collaboration spaces, the center is to facilitate these projects with more students on a greater scale. It is also expected to support workforce development in Alabama by preparing ASMS students to fill the need for high-level STEM jobs. Any ninth or tenth grader in the state who is excited about researching, learning or developing new skills is advised to contact ASMS about the admissions process, which will open this fall.
