Elberta Middle Wins Mural Contest

Elberta Middle School was recently announced a 2020 Classroom Mural Award winner in the Wyland National Art Challenge, according to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The contest encourages students across the nation to think about various conservation issues and how to interpret them through art. As one of only three winning classrooms from across the U.S., Elberta Middle will receive $500 from the Wyland Foundation for classroom art supplies. Art teacher Linda Hill led the winning group of seventh and eighth graders in Elberta’s recently established art program. “I only had the students for three months before we took on this large task,” Hill said. “With help from the Weeks Bay Reserve, we put together a 5- X 10-ft mural that represents our estuaries and the wildlife that inhabits them.” In addition to the mural award, Elberta Middle eighth grader Charlotte Hoang tied for first place in the individual eighth grade category of the contest with her painting of a sheepshead.
