Mobile Animal Shelter Operation Kicks Off At Hutchens

MOBILE, Ala. — Staff from the City of Mobile’s Animal Services department recently kicked off “Operation 2nd Graders Saving Shelter Pets” at Hutchens Elementary School in advance of National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day on April 30, Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced. More than 100 students attended an assembly, which taught about the needs of shelter pets and how their creativity can help gain awareness for foster programs and adoptions. The students will be undertaking a creative art and writing project to make drawings and biographies for some of the dogs and cats that have been in the city’s animal shelter the longest. “This type of partnership with local schools has worked well in other cities, and we’re excited about what it can do to raise awareness about the dogs and cats in our shelter,” Stimpson commented. “We thank Mrs. Mather and the staff at Hutchens for helping us get this started, and I look forward to sharing what the students create soon.”
