Mobile County Approves Funds For SHC Health, Innovation Center

Spring Hill College (SHC) has announced that Mobile County recently approved a $750,000 contribution to SHC’s Health and Science Innovation Center. This funding, along with what SHC hopes will be matched from the City of Mobile, would provide a total of $1.5 million to support the development of the advanced facility. Encompassing 57,000 ft2, it is expected to transform the college’s nursing, pre-medical, health sciences and natural science programs. This expansion will increase the college’s nursing program capacity from 40 to 120 students and boost the pre-medical and health sciences programs from 150 to 200 students. The center will replace the outdated Walsh Hall and will be strategically located at the heart of SHC’s academic campus. It is estimated to cost $37 million-$42 million. It is also supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration as part of an award totaling $36,615,031, with 5% financed with nongovernmental sources. Mobile County Commission President Randall Dueitt said of the funding, “This collaboration between Mobile County, the City of Mobile and SHC demonstrates our shared commitment to advancing education and healthcare, which are vital to our region’s growth. We are excited to support this agreement, which will not only enhance educational opportunities, but also contribute to the economic development of Mobile County.”
