Summerdale Elementary Opens

Baldwin County Public Schools and community leaders recently cut the ribbon for the new $30-million Silverhill Elementary School on a 73-acre campus, replacing a school that opened 69 years ago and served approximately 500 kindergarten through 6th grade students, Mullet Wrapper reported. The new 37,000-ft2 campus includes a storm shelter, a cafeteria and kitchen for 480 students, a gymnasium that seats 580, a choral room, a band room, a media center, security cameras and a covered car dropoff area. The school has 56 classrooms, including pre-K; science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and special-needs classrooms. Its size anticipates the continuation of high growth in South Baldwin County. The old school will be used by the school system in another capacity.
