UM Arts School Wins 10 National Awards

The University of Mobile’s (UM) Alabama School of the Arts has been honored with 10 awards from The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, a national program recognizing excellence and diversity in university and college theater programs across the U.S. The awards program celebrates the finest work in university and college theater, highlighting outstanding achievements in all areas of production. “This recognition is a significant honor, as only a select few institutions receive these coveted awards each season,” UM said, adding that its faculty bring decades of experience and expertise to UM classrooms and rehearsals. The following Alabama School of the Arts faculty and students in its department of theatre were recipients of The Kennedy Center awards: Stewart Hawley, assistant professor of theatre and chair, and Alexandra Trosper, assistant professor of music, for “Director”; Gregory Wiggins, instructor of music for “Music Direction”; Malinda Powers, adjunct instructor, theatre costumes and design, for “Costume Design”; Heidi Lemon, adjunct instructor, theatre dance, for “Choreography”; Chad Rivers, production technologies student, for “Lighting Design”; Jeremy Harford, director of production technologies, for “Technical Direction”; and Katie Jones, director of media and production, for “Sound Design.” Hawley and Powers each won two awards, with the others listed each winning one.
