Daphne to Build Multimillion-Dollar Animal Shelter

The City of Daphne is moving forward with plans for a new animal shelter to cost $4-5 million, GulfCoastNewsToday.com reports. While the city will seek local donations for the shelter, it is not looking for funding from the county or other cities. Mayor Robin LeJeune said that, while more information is forthcoming, the structure will sit on the same site on Johnson Road, west of Highway 98, where the current building, Dr. Albert Corte Animal Shelter, is located. The current shelter will continue to operate while the new building is constructed and then be demolished. Annually, it takes in 800-1,000 animals, approximately one-third of which are adopted, rescued or reclaimed.
