Dauphin Island Bridge Rehabilitation To Begin Soon

A multiyear, multimillion-dollar rehabilitation project is set to begin as early as next month on the Dauphin Island Bridge, WPMI reports. The bridge, built in 1982, has endured continual exposure to harsh saltwater conditions, and this project will “ensure it remains safe and reliable for years to come,” the Alabama Department of Transportation said. The $33.7-million project is funded with 80% federal funds, with the state matching 20%, and is expected to take 5 years to complete. Work on the bridge includes applying a special zinc protective coating, concrete repairs, joint and crack sealing, and repairing bridge components such as bearings and columns. The project was recently awarded to Southern Road and Bridge of Tarpon Springs, Florida.
