Governments Fund Evicted, Victims

Gov. Kay Ivey awarded six grants to help victims of domestic violence and child abuse in eight counties, including Mobile and Baldwin counties, Call News recently reported. Family Counseling Center of Mobile Inc. received $698,000, Penelope House Inc. received $628,000, Baldwin County Violence Shelter (The Lighthouse) received $391,000, and CARE House Inc. in Bay Minette received $121,000.

In October, Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson had announced that, through partnerships with nonprofit agencies, the city would commit more than $1.5 million of new funding to help support Legal Services of Alabama, the staff of which represents Mobilians facing eviction in court and helps rehouse those who have been evicted. Stimpson had added that the city made another $300,000 available to the Penelope House.
