Homeownership Down Payment Assistance Program Kicks Off

The Mobile County Grants Department has received final approval for its Homeownership Down Payment Assistance Program from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. It will begin accepting applications for down payment assistance grants up to $50,000. Designed to help residents affected by Hurricanes Sally and Zeta in 2020 and promote affordable homeownership, this program will give priority to low- to moderate-income homeowners and renters impacted by 2020 hurricanes. Applications will be accepted until funding is depleted. Applicants initiate the process by emailing a preapproval letter from a reputable lender to the Mobile County Grants Department. Applicants will be required to submit proof of Mobile County residency during the hurricanes and complete a homebuyer counseling program. Once these steps are complete, the homebuyer and lender complete the application for assistance and provide all requested documentation. If approved, there will be a home inspection. Grant recipients will be required to sign an agreement with Mobile County that includes a term in which they must live in the home as their primary residence.
