Mobile Breaks Ground On Affordable Housing Development

MOBILE, Ala. — The City of Mobile recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Maryvale Place apartment complex, an affordable housing development on the city’s eastern side, FOX10 reported. It will be built on the former land of Mae Eanes Middle School, which was closed by the Mobile County Public School System in 2016. The city has since bought the property from the school board. Once completed, Maryvale Place will be a 96-unit multifamily apartment complex on Hurtel Street. The complex will include one-, two- and three-bedroom units and specially designed units for tenants with special needs, as well as modern amenities like community spaces, laundry, computer centers and on-site pavilions. The goal is to give low-income families a chance to buy their own homes. Hollyhand Development of Northport, Alabama, will construct the $29-million project, and the Mobile Housing Authority will provide project-based Housing Choice Vouchers to fill many of the units.
