Mobile Civic Center Construction Updates

Mobile’s approximately $300-million Civic Center project has a schedule that includes the city council awarding the project’s construction contract on February 26, 2025, with construction beginning by March 12, 2025, AL.com reported. An overall final cost estimate for the project won’t likely be known until February 7, 2025, when construction bids are due to be returned to the city for consideration. Council members were briefed this week by the PFM Group, which is providing financial consultant work for the city, and Scott Collins, deputy finance director for the city who is working on the financing arrangements for the building, which will include a bond package. They were also given an update by Sam Matheny, program manager at Mobile-based Volkert, Inc., which is overseeing the project for the city. “I think we’ll be OK and hopefully come under the budget prescribed or right at it,” Councilman William Carroll said. The new facility is to open in early 2027, ahead of that year’s Mardi Gras, which is occurring early on February 9.
