Mobile County Recycling Center Reduces Hours

The Mobile County Recycling Center at 7450 Hitt Road in Mobile has reduced its operating hours to Monday-Friday at 7 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday at 7 a.m.-3 p.m. It is closed on Sundays. Manager Goodwill Gulf Coast, Inc., said usage has been exceeding capacity since mid-July, when other local recycling drop-off locations were closed due to a fire at the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority, which separates, processes and sells the materials collected in the City of Mobile. That facility remains closed to outside contracts around the Southeast. Additionally, Goodwill said sortation and contamination have significantly increased its labor requirements. The facility accepts the following residential household recyclables: paper; paperboard; cardboard; glass bottles and jars; aluminum cans; steel cans; plastic bags; and No. 1, 2 and 3-7 plastics. Those dropping off such items are asked to rinse any that previously held foodstuff or liquid, to uncap bottles/jars and to remove items from any bags before placing the bags in the recycling bins.
