Mobile Gets Funding For “Brookley By The Bay”

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson recently announced that the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation has amended its Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund “that will help secure and protect sensitive wetlands along Mobile’s waterfront.” A $2-million award from the foundation will allow the city to finalize the purchase of 45 acres of wetland adjacent to the recently acquired “Brookley by the Bay” property, formerly called “Brookley Park” (BBN #18 and 52). Stimpson added that a conservation easement with the South Alabama Land Trust will allow Mobile “to ensure this land is protected in perpetuity.” This is only a small portion of the nearly 300 acres at Brookley the city has acquired or will acquire from the University of South Alabama Foundation. Roughly half of it will be converted into a public park, 50 acres of wetlands along the coastline will be preserved and opened for public access, and another 100 acres adjacent to the Brookley Aerospace Complex will be dedicated to economic development and help accommodate suppliers and support services as Brookley continues to grow into the world’s fourth-largest site for the construction of commercial aircraft.
