Mobile Passes UDC, To Allocate $30 Million To Airport

MOBILE, Ala. — The July 12 meeting of the Mobile City Council saw passage of the Unified Development Code (UCD) after nearly seven years of debate, hundreds of public meetings, thousands of citizen comments, multiple drafts and two appearances on the council agenda. “The overhaul of a city’s zoning code is among the most challenging undertakings for any administration,” Mayor Sandy Stimpson said. “The foundational document passed by the council today improves neighborhoods, protects the environment, supports development and strengthens our economy.” Additionally, the council voted for an agreement with the Mobile Airport Authority to allocate $30 million in city funds directly to the relocation of Mobile’s passenger airport, now named Mobile International Airport, to the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley.
