Mobile Transportation Authorities Get $100 Million

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile Airport Authority and Alabama State Port Authority are receiving a combined $100 million in federal grant money to support various projects, AL.com is among outlets to report. The grant includes $62 million for the airport authority and $38 million for the port authority from the U.S. Department of Transportation Demonstration Program. Mobile is the only recipient of the grant, financed through the fiscal year 2021 appropriations bill. The airport authority’s money is going toward the construction of a new international airport terminal at the Brookley Aeroplex. The port authority’s portion is going toward two projects within the port: $20 million will be for an interterminal connector bridge connecting the docks to the intermodal container (rail) transfer facility and $18 million to improve utilities within a 124-acre logistics park. “It’s a unique collaboration between the airport, port authority and the city,” said John Driscoll, director and chief executive of the port authority. “It shows, in my mind, how different agencies and different interests can come together in one project and for it to be beneficial to the state, the city and the region.”
