National Weather Service Names Head Meteorologist

MOBILE, Ala. — Jason Beaman has been named meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service in Mobile, AL.com reports. Beaman, who has been at the office for nearly 13 years, succeeds Jeffrey Medlin, who has retired. He will oversee the office’s operations and personnel. Beaman was most recently named warning coordination meteorologist in Mobile in 2015. A native of south Baldwin County, he originally volunteered at the weather service, then became a student meteorologist there while studying at the University of South Alabama. He went on to work at the weather service offices in Memphis and Raleigh before returning to Mobile as a lead forecaster in 2009. He said he will focus on protecting people by first building trust. “And we’re also going to be an office that continues to focus on the science, and how do we get better at forecasting, because that’s truly how we help people is having that good, solid understanding of the science, learning new things, staying on top of new tools and new research, and trying to put it all together, he added.
