Raises Announced For Mobile Employees

MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson recently announced cost of living increases for the city’s workers “to catch up to neighboring jurisdictions” and cope with rising costs due to inflation. While city employees recently received a 5% cost of living adjustment beginning with fiscal year 2022, they are getting another 2.5% cost of living adjustment, effective April 9. Additionally, the city’s minimum entry-level wage is increasing from $11.89 an hour to $15.22 an hour, effective April 23, and a 2.5% minimum merit raise is being proposed into next year’s budget. Earlier this year, the city engaged the University of South Alabama to take a regional compensation survey that Stimpson said serves “as the first step towards a larger analysis.” Plans are for Mobile to engage a third-party consultant for a more comprehensive pay analysis for all classifications in the city. In the meantime, its human resources department will study the markets in Mobile and Baldwin counties to see how the city’s compensation compares.
