ICC Gets New Brain Cancer Technology

With the recent gift of $375,000 from the Mobile Infirmary Auxiliary, Infirmary Cancer Care (ICC) purchased equipment designed to deliver the most effective radiation treatments to brain cancer patients. With the new TrueBeam HyperArc, accompanied by the Varian 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) couch, ICC patients will receive radiation therapy exclusive to the Infirmary Health System. With HyperArc, radiation oncologists can deliver more compact radiation doses that closely conform to the size, shape and location of the brain tumor, while avoiding surrounding healthy tissue. Some treatments that once took 10-30 min. can now be completed in less than 2 min. For HyperArc to precisely deliver radiation doses to brain tumors, it requires the advanced 6DoF, which is able to move patients in six different degrees and more precisely than previous treatment couches.
