Alabama Shipyard Wins $16-Million Contract

Alabama Shipyard, LLC, of Mobile has been selected for a $16-million U.S. Navy contract to overhaul the USNS William McLean. The work is to be completed by November 24. Additionally, days before the Navy contract was awarded, Business Alabama reported, the MV Cape Diamond arrived at the shipyard for coatings, steel renewals, modifications, repairs and testing. The Cape Diamond is a roll-on/roll-off vehicle ship assigned to the U.S. Maritime Administration Ready Reserve Force and can transition to full operating status in only five days. Built in 1972 in France to sail under the Norwegian flag, it was purchased by the U.S. in 1985 and activated in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the War on Terror during 2001-2014.
