Austal Starts Construction On Final Assembly Facility

Mobile-based Austal USA has begun construction on the company’s newest final assembly facility south of its current waterfront facility. Its design includes a new assembly building, waterfront improvements and a new shiplift system. The construction continues the expansion Austal began in March 2021 with the groundbreaking of its steel panel line. It will provide a new assembly bay, which will enable the erection of large steel modules for U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships, including the Offshore Patrol Cutter and TAGOS-25 programs. The shiplift is to provide a safe and reliable system to launch ships as they are completed in the assembly buildings and enable bringing ships back on the landside facility for repair and maintenance. The new assembly building will occupy 4.5 acres and will be approximately 400 ft long by 480 ft wide, providing more than 192,000 ft2 of new covered manufacturing space. The project is scheduled to be complete and fully operational by summer 2026.
