Austal Wins $128-Million Contract

MOBILE, Ala. — Austal USA of Mobile has been awarded a $128-million contract to design and build an auxiliary dry dock for the U.S. Navy, Business Alabama is among outlets to report. The 694- by 157-ft dry dock will have 18,000 long tons of lift capacity and 90,800 ft2 of workspace. The second steel project to be performed on Austal’s new steel panel line, which opened in April, it will incorporate features to improve operability and maintainability based on the company’s experience in owning, operating and maintaining a similar dry dock at its repair facility. It will be built using Austal’s Lean manufacturing approach.
