SSAB Moving Ahead With Expansion

The Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that SSAB Americas’ continued investment in its steel mill in Mobile County is moving forward. The current phase of work, valued at $69 million, is expanding the company’s manufacturing footprint by 54,000 ft2 and adding new equipment to increase production capacity and efficiencies for quenched and tempered steels. The company expects to add 31 employees over the next three years to its current roster of more than 600. “SSAB is committed to further investment in the Alabama mill and its future with a project of this size,” said Tom Toner, SSAB Americas vice president, operations. “COVID-19 and economic recession concerns put the project in jeopardy for more than a year. We are excited to get started on it.” The mill was built in 2001, and SSAB began operations in 2007. It is one of Alabama’s largest steel scrap recyclers, consuming approximately 1.6 million tons of scrap metal annually.
