MOBILE, Ala. — The Carnivorous Kingdom, a new documentary by filmmaker Ben Raines, a former AL.com journalist and longtime environmental writer, will have its world premiere at the Mobile Saenger Theatre on August 22 at 5 p.m. Though registration is required, the screening will be free due to support from the Saenger, Poarch Band of Creek Indians, Sierra Club Alabama Chapter and Alabama Coastal Foundation. The film, which offers a view into Alabama’s flesh-eating plants, has been four years in the making. It focuses on what organizers call “one of the most diverse places on Earth: the pitcher plant bogs of Alabama” and is filmed with ultra-close macro videography. It also serves as a cautionary tale highlighting how these plants are diminishing in number and outlines ways Alabamians can protect them. Raines will be present to talk about the film and discuss his recent book, The Last Slave Ship (BBN #79). The first TV airing of the film will be on Alabama Public Television on August 24 at 7 p.m.
