Nonprofit To Lead Mobile Resilience Study

MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson intends for Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based nonprofit The Water Institute of the Gulf to lead local partners including Volkert, the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, Waggoner and Ball, Ephriam Environmental, and Moffatt & Nichol to develop a resilience assessment and plan for Mobile. If approved by the council, the team will assess city programs, policies and operations over the next 18 months, while engaging community groups and stakeholders to evaluate Mobile’s abilities and vulnerabilities relating to urban resilience. Considered “the capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses and systems within a city to survive, adapt and thrive no matter what chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience,” urban resilience includes hardiness versus climate change, hurricanes, and social and economic conditions. The information gathering is to lead to a resilience plan specifically for Mobile that will outline a roadmap for improvement.
