Penelope House Receives $10,000 Grant

The Megan Montgomery Foundation recently awarded $75,000 in grants to schools and nonprofits across Alabama this month at the conclusion of its summer grant cycle, advancing the foundation’s mission to stop relationship violence before it starts by investing in healthy relationship education programs. Locally, Penelope House of Mobile was granted $10,000 to support its prevention education program, which works to stop the cycle of violence by educating students about ways to stay safe and live nonviolent lives. Through the program, students learn to recognize signs of abuse, how to disclose an abusive situation, express their feelings in healthy ways, communicate nonviolently and understand the characteristics of both abusive and healthy dating relationships. Tonie Ann Torrans, executive director at Penelope House, said, “We have had funding reductions, and this grant allows us to reach more teens about the importance of healthy relationships.”
