Downtown Mobile Sports Exhibit Approved

Mobile mayor Sandy Stimpson recently announced a new sports exhibit coming to Downtown Mobile. The project “will help honor and preserve the legacy of some of our city’s most iconic sports figures, including Hall of Fame baseball players Hank Aaron, Satchel Paige, Billy Williams, Ozzie Smith and Willie Lee McCovey," Stimpson said. The Mobile City Council unanimously approved a contract with RH Deas Building Co. to construct Heroes Plaza. The new public asset aims highlight the athletes from the community, while creating an attraction that draws residents and visitors to the downtown waterfront. “The cornerstone of Heroes Plaza will be the 9-ft-tall bronze statues of Mobile’s Hall of Fame Baseball players, but there will also be several other enhancements made to the area between the Mobile Convention Center and Cooper Riverside Park. Funded through the downtown [tax increment financing district], this $8.8-million project will also add a new intersection, a roundabout and a revised dropoff for vehicles. Additional [Americans with Disabilities Act] ramps will also be added, along with a new fountain, pedestals and signage for the statues, and improvements to the landscaping, lighting, security, drainage and sidewalks,” Stimpson said.
