Ground Broken On New Mobile Park
Work on the Isom Clemon Civil Rights Memorial Park in Downtown Mobile is underway, according to the Downtown Mobile Alliance. The triangular park, bounded by Congress Street, Hamilton Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, will be developed with new landscaping and hardscaping, a children’s play area and several pieces of public art. The new greenspace is coming about through a collaboration between the city, the Mobile County Commission, the Mobile Arts Council, the Downtown Mobile Alliance and local stakeholders. One of the gateways to the park will have a new sculpture created by local artists Charles Smith and Frank Ledbetter. The large metal sculpture is nearly complete, and name ideas are requested in a naming contest. Once complete, the park will serve as an anchor for the Civil Rights and Cultural Heritage District, now in the development stage. This trail is to showcase a significant aspect of Mobile’s history for both visitors and locals.
