Mobile To Open Pools, Splash Pads; Launches Water Safety Program

The City of Mobile’s swimming pools, splash pads and aquatic programs will open on May 27. Each splash pad has a safe, rubberized surface, with fountain and spray features that are wheelchair accessible. Proper swimwear is required to use the splash pad, and infants and toddlers must wear a swim diaper. Splash pads are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through September 28. The Mobile Parks and Recreation Department will have four fully staffed pools open six days a week this summer. The swimming pools are open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through August 3. Additionally, this summer, the department is partnering with the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority to offer a new course, Swim 1922. This safety program is taught across the country to help young people stay safe when swimming. Children ages 5-8 can participate for free. Children in the city can enroll in swim classes, which will be offered June 4-July 25 in partnership with the Port City Marlins swim team. Level I lessons cover basics like floating, kicking, breathing and basic stroke development. Level II builds on those techniques with additional strokes, breathing techniques and more advanced goals for young swimmers. For more information about lessons, facilities and programs, contact Aquatics Manager Derrick Tinsley at phone: (251) 436-9856.
