Saraland’s Walter Cofield Park And Boat Launch Awarded Gomesa Funding

The City of Saraland has been awarded $2.5 million in Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) funds to improve Walter Cofield Park and Boat Launch. The funding will improve access to the waterfront, enhance public safety and strengthen an important piece of Saraland’s onshore recreational infrastructure. The park at 414 Ruben Avenue is Saraland’s only public access to Bayou Sara and serves residents and visitors for boating, fishing, waterfront recreation and community gatherings. Planned improvements include an expanded boat launch with a pier and fish-cleaning station, improved parking, an enclosed playground for multiple age groups, a new restroom building, covered picnic areas and a weigh-in pavilion to support fishing tournaments and other public events. Additional improvements include upgraded lighting, signage and site furnishings, as well as enhancements to boardwalks and sidewalks. Collectively, these improvements are part of Phase I plans that will modernize a heavily used public waterfront facility, enhance the user experience and create lasting value for the community. Phase I is expected to be completed in 2027 with an additional Phase II bringing the Park’s total planned renovation investment to approximately $4 million.
