Chastang Landfill Expansion Rejected

Citing concerns that include the impact of nearby residences, the Mobile County Commission recently voted against a proposed expansion of Chastang Landfill in Mount Vernon, FOX10 News reports. The City of Mobile owns the landfill, for which owner WM was seeking permission to accept more garbage from outside the county by raising the limit on solid waste from 1,750 to 5,000 tons. WM also wanted the facility to be able to accept garbage from parts of Mississippi and Florida. While the county previously granted a similar request from a landfill approximately 2 miles away, that one is not in a residential area like Chastang.
