Riviera, Viridi Partner To Recover Landfill Gas

Renewable natural gas company Viridi Energy is constructing a landfill gas recovery facility adjacent to Magnolia Landfill in Summerdale, AL.com reports. Riviera Utilities will use the natural gas, converted from the landfill’s methane gas, for a fuel source. Bill Keller, executive vice president of Viridi, says the plant will be operational in fourth quarter 2024. It is to produce more than 1 million British thermal units, enough energy to heat more than 2,500 homes, of “renewable natural gas” a year. Viridi will sell the gas to BP for 10 years. Riviera will purchase the gas at a rate based on the market index. Baldwin County anticipates receiving around $650,000-$700,000 per year from the gas, which will be used to offset the cost of building the county’s materials recovery facility, which is set to be completed later this year and will allow for curbside recycling throughout the county. This project has been in the works since 2019, when the county awarded AEP Renewable Fuels the bid to construct a landfill gas recovery facility adjacent to Magnolia Landfill. Viridi took over the project in December 2022.
