Old Casino Boat To Become Alabama’s Largest Reef
WKRG reports that one of two old casino riverboats lying unused at the Bayou La Batre City Docks could soon become Alabama’s largest artificial reef. Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Marine Resources Division officials are working toward an agreement with the owner to get the approximately 300,000-ft2 structure onto the floor of the Gulf of America. Preparations aboard the boat have already begun dismantling the four-story former floating casino. Robert Akridge, who is performing the work alongside his crew, expects the structure’s sinking to take place by October.
