Coastal Hazards Workshop Announced

The Nature-Based Solutions for Coastal Hazards Workshop, a two-part course intended to prepare coastal managers and planners to plan and implement green (natural) infrastructure projects to reduce natural coastal hazards in their community, has been announced. Part 1, The Basics, is a self-guided online module that covers foundational concepts prior to attending the in-person event. Part 2, Developing a Strategy, takes place at the Tonsmeire Weeks Bay Reserve Resource Center in Fairhope on May 30 at 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Participants will interact with their peers and local experts to develop a green infrastructure strategy. After completing the course, participants will be able to describe the green infrastructure practices that can reduce hazard impacts and build resilience in their community and list considerations for choosing techniques. Participants will work together to develop the beginnings of a green infrastructure strategy that considers hazard-reduction benefits, co-benefits, design, maintenance, costs and implementation. Continuing education units from the American Institute of Certified Planners or Association of State Floodplain Managers are available. Registration is available here.
