MMofA Kicks Off Two Exhibits Next Week

The Mobile Museum of Art (MMofA) is hosting kickoffs for “Louise Nevelson: Dawn to Dusk” and “Timeless Hats” on January 29 with a members-only reception at 6 p.m. “Dawn to Dusk” traces Nevelson’s formative years to her emergence as a sculptor of international renown through 40 works selected from the Farnsworth Art Museum collection. Spanning her career from 1929 to 1985, the exhibition includes a selection of early paintings and figurative sculptures in terracotta, cast stone and bronze, painted wood sculptures, reliefs, collages and handcrafted jewelry. “Timeless Hats” displays the key role hats played in African life from before the Atlantic slave trade of the 17th century to modern day. Susie Mae-Pugh Williams (1949-2020) was born and raised in Mobile. Self-taught, she created hats, wraps, fascinators and other headwear for herself, friends and clients. Those creations would have been worn to church or for events such as weddings and Mardi Gras festivities. This exhibition contains more than two dozen hats either made by Williams or that she admired and drew inspiration from for her own creations.
