Thompson Engineering Project Featured

Thompson Engineering’s role in the $60 million AutoMobile International Processing Center that opened at the Port of Mobile earlier this year was recently featured in Business Alabama’s “Amazing Builds” issue. For the project, Thompson had to raise the level of the ground the facility now sits on to raise the level of roll-on, roll-off capability at the port. Thompson poured a staggering 1.7 million ft2 of asphalt—enough to store 7,000 vehicles at one time and enable an annual throughput capability of 150,000 vehicles. With the bulk of the work being done during November 2019-October 2020, 25,000 dump truck loads of imported fill were brought in, with 65-70 trucks a day entering the port with fill for the project. “We imported 574,000 y3 of fill,” said Jay Morgan, principal project manager at Thompson. “It’s rare that a typical job would exceed importing maybe more than 10,000 y3.” In addition, Thompson used drone technology to fly the site monthly to document progress.
