Fairhope Working To Bring Sidewalks Into Compliance

The City of Fairhope is expecting to spend at least $400,000 from its general fund to bring its sidewalks into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), NBC 15 reports. According to Fairhope Public Works Director Richard Johnson, the work is a result of a complaint filed with the U.S. Department of Justice that was administered by the Federal Highway Administration. Typically, the city voluntarily brings neighborhoods to ADA compliance when major infrastructure repairs are done and builds an average of 2 mi. of new sidewalks each year. An outside engineering firm has been hired to design the new sidewalks, and the deadline for the work is 2023.
